Confusion reigns over IIM admissionsA day after IIM Ahmedabad director Bakul Dholakia announced that the IIM admission list would be declared on April 21, the ministry of human resource development said its yet to receive any communication from the IIMs. In the absence of an official communication from the IIMs, it is not clear whether the institutes will be able to go ahead with their plan. In the event there is no clarity from the judiciary on this, things might just get worse.
The government had, in its order of April 5, asked the IIMs to keep their admission list on hold. A decision as to when the final list would be put up can only be taken after the matter is settled in the court, once the government files its petition. The government is likely to move the apex court in this connection on Monday. Meanwhile, the ministry of human resource development maintains that government orders are sacrosanct.

IIMs Che in Red cubicle
The mane and the beard are missing; so are the smouldering eyes of a rebel. All the same, a Che has come to the CPM.
In contrast with the guerrilla guru from Latin Americas jungles, Chepuri Sri Krishna represents the cream of the corporate world. And he has no lessons to teach the CPM but only to learn.
The student of Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad, has travelled to Delhi to do his two-month summer internship with Indias largest communist party.

9 Gateforum students in GATE 2007 top 10, next batch from June
Nine students from the Gateforum Institute of Jadavpur University were ranked in the top ten according to the recently published results of the Graduate Aptitude Test for Engineering (GATE), 2007.

IIMs will now wait for govt green signal
While government is clear that it will seek remedies to the situation created by the SC by going back to the apex court, it is under severe pressure to ensure that the quota regime gets going in 2007-08 itself.
Big OBC players like RJD boss Lalu Prasad have not raised the tempo — given new alignments in north India, they too are seeking some upper-caste support.
But all parties with OBC bases point out that the staggered introduction of the quota was acceptable to their constituents only if it began rolling out this year.

IIM admission process for 2007 goes haywire
The Supreme Courts stay on implementation of the 27% reservation for OBCs has thrown the admission process for the academic year 2007-08 out of gear. The apex court has put the brakes on the Central Educational Institutions (Reservation in Admission) Act, 2006, by which the Indian Institutes of Management, Indian Institutes of Technology, National Institutes of Technology and Central Universities would be required to increase intake by 54% in order to provide for a 27% increase in reservation for Other Backward Classes.
The most affected by the stay would be the Indian Institutes of Management. The IIMs were to have completed their admission process by April 12. As a matter of fact, IIM-Ahmedabad was in the last stage of finalising the list of successful candidates. IIM-Bangalore and IIM-Lucknow are in the process of conducting the group discussions.
Sources in the IIM management said that they were awaiting the government order before working out the next step. Once we receive the governments order, we will convene a meeting of the IIM admission committee to decide the next course of action, said a senior IIM official.

IIM-Bangalore poised for a new growth phase: PG Apte, director, IIM-B
On the back of a good performance in the current academic year and many future initiatives aimed at expanding offerings for India and overseas, IIM-Bangalore (IIM-B) director Dr PG Apte is confident that IIM-B is all set to enter a new growth phase.
Delivering his address at the convocation on March 26, Dr Apte said, We are poised to enter a new phase of growth. The institute has initiated steps to make necessary amendments in the Memorandum of Association with a view to expanding and diversifying its portfolio of academic, research, training, consulting and other activities both within and outside India. This is expected to open up new and exciting opportunities in the global arena… Two sub-committees constituted by the board are giving shape to the short-term and long-term vision that will guide the institute to the next level of growth.
Dr Apte said the institute is responding to the growing demand for quality management education number and implementation of the new reservation policy by adding more seats. IIMB has planned to increase the PGP intake in a phased manner over the next three years. This has been done in view of the limitations that exist in infrastructure and faculty, he said, adding that the institute was hopeful of substantial support from the government.
