Nirma varsity students bag prize for revamping store

Ahmedabad : ARYASANSKRITI, an organic food store located in the city, got a new lease of life after a team of management students from Nirma University (NU) gave it a make-over.

The store, that was earlier unable to sell its organic products, was able to increase sales by leaps and bounds due to the efforts of a team of students from the Institute of Management at NU, who gave it a new product logo, a new packaging technique and collaboration with the SEWA cafe.

The IMNU team, which was asked to create a managerial framework for the store as part of a SIFE (Students In Free Enterprise) competition, were also adjudged runners up for their efforts.

SIFE, a global non-profit organization active in more than 40 countries, develops community outreach projects that concern five educational topics — Market Economics, Success Skills, Entrepreneurship, Financial Literacy and Business Ethics.

About 38 colleges from India, who have enrolled with SIFE, participated in a competition wherein the teams had to present the results of their educational outreach projects to determine which one of them was most successful in creating economic opportunity for others.

The IMNU team, which presented their project on healthy living through organic food, were declared runners up at the national final held on June 18.

The team also had to work towards educating consumers about organic food and persuading farmers to turn to organic farming.

‘‘To increase the accessibility of the product, we designed a separate logo for them. We held a seminar for women at the Lion’s Club. The seminar had a snow-ball effect as the women who attended it helped increase the walk-ins through word of mouth,’’ said Sneha Goenka, one of the team members. She said, ‘‘We also collaborated with the SEWA cafe for the display of the store’s products.’’

Teams from other institutes like IIM-A, Symbiosis, K J Somaiya, XIMB and NMIMS also participated in the competition.
