Iroquois organization hosts trip to museums

The Iroquois Studies Association is sponsoring an overnight bus trip to visit two American Indian museums. The bus will leave the Oakdale Mall parking lot at 8 a.m. July 12 and return between 10 and 11 p.m. July 13.

The tour will visit the Iroquois Indian Museum in Howes Cave, which features contemporary Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) art and historical and archeological pieces. The museum is shaped like a traditional Haudenosaunee longhouse.

The bus will continue east, stop for lunch and arrive in North Stonington, Conn., in late afternoon. After enjoying a motel reception and unpacking, the participants will go to Foxwoods, the largest casino in North America, where they can tour the casino’s exhibits and dine at one of its many restaurants. After dinner, the bus will return to the motel, but participants can remain at the casino and take a motel shuttle bus later.

After a complimentary motel breakfast, the bus will go to the Mashantucket Pequot Museum, where excellent exhibits describe life in New England over the last 12,000 years. The largest exhibit is a full-size replica of a 1,000-year-old village. The current featured exhibit is about mastodons and mammoths and Ice Age life.

The museum is hosting a pow wow that day, featuring Indian dancing, food, and art and craftwork.

After supper, the bus will head back to Johnson City.

Cost: $150 ($140 for ISA and IIM members; single supplement, $40). That covers transportation, museum entrance fees, motel, motel reception and breakfast.
